Happy Birthday Ali!

My friend Ali only has a birthday once every four years, poor guy! But seeing as how yesterday (February 29) was his 9th (!) birthday, we decided to host a little surprise dinner party for him. In addition to really delicious food from Buffalo's Aladdin Cafe and cake from Sweet Tooth, we surprised Ali with some fun presents. John and I gave him this mosaic table for his new(ish) house. I found the table (and plates that I broke up to make mosaic pieces) at the Amvets Thrift Store in Buffalo.

Happy Birthday Adam!

Today is my brother Adam's birthday. I got him a cool, crafty present but I can't blog about it yet because I haven't given it to him, and I want it to be a surprise. I hope he has a really great day because he is a really great brother who doesn't take himself too seriously (as evidenced by the photo above). One of the best parts about moving back home to Buffalo has been having Adam as my downstairs tenant. In honor of Adam's role as Beer Dude at Buffalo Rising, I present this poem from the World Beer Poetry Championships in his honor:

HOW DO I LOVE THEE?

How do I love thee?
Let me count the ways?
I love cold beer
on hot summer days.
I love small bottles
Of special brews.
I love a beer
When watching the news.
I love it dark
I love it bright
I love it at mid-day
I love it at night.
How do I love thee?
Let me count the ways.
I love it best
When somebody else pays.

Birthday Presents Still Pouring In

Somehow I've lucked out with birthday presents this year; although my birthday was almost 3 weeks ago, I'm still getting gifts! Yesterday a huge box arrived from my sisters-in-law Ashlee and Ginny, with a bunch of presents from Ecuador (where Ginny studied last semester) and two new books I've been coveting: Bend the Rules Sewing: The Essential Guide to a Whole New Way to Sew by Amy Karol of Angry Chicken, and Lotta Jansdotter's Simple Sewing: Patterns and How-To for 24 Fresh and Easy Projects. I can't wait to try some of the projects!

Crazy Birthday Cake

I don't know what came over me, but I made a really kooky cake for my husband's birthday yesterday. I decided to use my new Baker's Edge pan to make the cake (actually an applesauce bread with cream cheese frosting) and then cut them into four strips. I got inspired in the gummy bulk foods section of Wegmans grocery store (if you don't know about Wegmans, I'm sorry... and FYI, there's no apostrophe in the name, which is something that probably only bothers me).

Immediately after blowing out the candles, John ate a gummy tarantula.

This is the cake that my husband would probably like for me to make for his birthday, which is today. Unfortunately, I didn't. In fact, I haven't been very crafty at all for his big day... probably because I'm frantically working to get my dissertation proposal finished and preparing for our upcoming trip to Mongolia. But I don't think he really minds-- I did make him a cake, and I also got him The Office (U.S. version-- we watched the British version when it came out but haven't yet seen the U.S. one, and by all accounts it's really good) and Heroes on DVD.

Oh, and I went to the movies and watched a really creepy Kevin Bacon movie with him (the name of which I've already forgotten). At one point I said, "I think I'd rather just be sitting in the lobby than watching this," to which he responded, "Now you know how I felt when we went to see Mamma Mia." Fair enough. Happy Birthday, buster!

Birthday Report

Yesterday was my birthday. I mostly "celebrated" by working on my dissertation proposal. Sigh. But I did receive presents from my nearest and dearest, including Margaret Cho tickets, some much appreciated $$, a nice post on a friend's blog, Malcolm Gladwell's new book Blink, and the wonderful vintage (1970s, I think) framed embroidery shown above. Thanks, Sarah, for rescuing this little gem for me. It's found a new home in my kitchen.

Birthday Links

In case you're like me and have a lot of summer birthdays to celebrate, here are some crafty links to help you prepare:

1. In case of birthday emergency, download this card.
2. How to make a birthday banner.
3. How to make a balloon arch.
4. Or how about a sock monkey pop-up birthday card?

Homage to My Sister

Today is my dear heart sister Sarah's 30th birthday. She is one of the strongest, most determined people I know. Thirty is one of those milestone birthdays where you are expected to stop and take stock of what you've accomplished. Sarah should be proud when she does that. And in honor of all her strengths, I've crafted the following things for her:

A knitting needle case. I modified the pattern and made this to fit circular needles, because Sarah needs a circular needle case. Once again, it looks completely crooked and the actual product is totally straight. I think the one side is curling up, causing it to look lopsided. It's not, I promise you!

A matching bag to hold balls of yarn and other knitting goods. I used fabric from my vintage stash (the flowered print) to make both the case and the bag.

My brother and I also made her a scrapbook called "Sarah: From 0 to 30 in Photos." Here is the exterior as well as the front page of our handiwork:

To close, a poem by Maya Angelou, honoring the fact that with a sister like Sarah in the world, I'll never be alone:

Alone

Lying, thinking
Last night
How to find my soul a home
Where water is not thirsty
And bread loaf is not stone
I came up with one thing
And I don't believe I'm wrong
That nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

There are some millionaires
With money they can't use
Their wives run round like banshees
Their children sing the blues
They've got expensive doctors
To cure their hearts of stone.
But nobody
No, nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Now if you listen closely
I'll tell you what I know
Storm clouds are gathering
The wind is gonna blow
The race of man is suffering
And I can hear the moan,
'Cause nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Leos, Leos Everywhere

I know many people who have summer Leo birthdays. I've been preparing the birthday goods for my sister's 30th (which happens tomorrow) and this weekend I went to a BBQ for two other Leos I know, Angela and Kelly. Although they firmly stated, "No Presents!" on the invite, I checked with Angela, who said a handmade gift would be okay. Behold, necklaces for these Leo lovelies:

The boxes... from Martha Stewart's new line of craft supplies. I had a gift card, these matchboxes were 50% off, the rest is predictable. Here's a link to some other MS packaging ideas, since these particular boxes are not on the Michael's website.

I didn't have any tissue paper readily available, so I used pom-poms to fill the boxes. Turns out that Kelly's cat loves pom-poms, so I sort of gave her cat a gift too.

Voila, the necklaces themselves. Simple but cute, and a celebration of some wonderful Leo women.
